How Often Should You Veg Out?
As children our mothers went to great lengths to convince us to eat veggies. Despite their creative efforts of hiding broccoli under mountains of cheese whiz, as adults many of us still do not incorporate them into our daily diets.
We are all busy and sometimes veggies are at the bottom of our to do list. Sure I like ice cream as much as the next girl but, at some point you need to start compromising with yourself for the sake of your health. If you have time for ice cream, you have time for veggies too! Balance is important in every part of our lives including our dinner plates.
How Many Veggies?
The latest daily recommended amount of fruits/vegetables per day is 1-10 servings. This works out to approximately 2.5 cups of veggies and 2 cups of fruit per day. (Canada's Food Guide)
How To Incorporate
You may be thinking that 2.5 cups of veggies per day is a lot! As always I have you covered with quick ways to get those greens:
#1 Frozen Veggies
For years I stayed away from frozen veggies as I felt they would not be as nutritious as fresh ones. Turns out, they are actually frozen at peak condition/ripeness which might make them MORE nutrient dense than the off season vegetables found at the supermarket.
Tip: I keep a variety of frozen vegetables in the freezer at all times. The night before work I put 1 cup in my lunch, by the time I get to work they are thawed and I have nearly had half of my daily intake of veg checked off
#2 Pre-Washed Salads
I love salad for volume! With a great dressing I can eat cups of salad at a time while enjoying it! (*gasp*) The only prep work is dumping it into an awesome salad bowl. I choose to buy fresh arugula, spinach or mixed greens- sometimes combining all three.
Most of the below dressings can be purchased at your local supermarket or specialty health food store.
#3 Cut Up Veggies
Everyone loves a good crunch. Rather than reaching for your usual bag of chips at 3pm try snacking on a serving of veg instead.
A few times a week chop up some of your favourite veggies and put them in baggies, all you will need to do is throw a pre chopped baggie into your lunch each morning. Make your new snack even better by "dipping" into hummus or guacamole.
#4 Greens Powder
Let's face it, some days we will simply fail. Some days I find myself grabbing every meal on the go leaving all the veggies behind in the process. I discovered Genuine Health Greens+ this helps me ensure that I reach my green quota no matter what.
Get this, 1x 3 tbsp serving = 6 servings of fruits/veg! This product has 23 plant based nutrients and lots of antioxidants. I love the way it makes me feel and it has quickly entered it's way into my daily intake.
Lettuce know if you have any comments of questions!
